Mediation Unit / Global Mediation Panel

As part of the efforts to improve the organizational culture and the ways of responding to grievances, the Office of the Ombudsman for United Nations Funds and Programmes is increasing the capacity for mediation services through its Mediation Unit. This strengthened capacity will allow staff of the five UN organizations (UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNOPS, and UN Women) to raise concerns and issues informally to a confidential, independent body, and have these issues addressed in a faster, less intrusive way.

The Mediation Unit comprises of a dedicated team of mediation practitioners that manage mediation activities and cases for UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNOPS, and UN Women.

As part of this enhanced capacity, the Office of the Ombudsman has developed a Global Mediation Panel consisting of external on-call mediators approved by the Office of the Ombudsman who will mediate workplace disputes involving the five UN organizations as they occur.

Programs and Updates

The Mediation Unit has launched a series of 1.5-hour training events titled “A Conversation with the Mediator”, aimed at bringing mediation closer to country offices, regional, and HQ teams.

Not only does “A Conversation with the Mediator” include a mediation training session for all personnel (regardless of contract modality) in selected country offices of the five agencies the Office of the Ombudsman serves but it will also allow participants to book a time slot with a mediator to explore the suitability of mediation for concerns they may have. Where possible, the program will provide a unique opportunity to staff to meet the members of the Global Mediation Panel  based in their countries. No registration is needed for participation in the training part of the program. However, if you’d like to speak to one of our mediators after the training session, please register here (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CWM2022) to book one of the limited slots available for a confidential intake conversation with Mushegh Manukyan and Maria Migoya Fernandez, or when available, with the members of the Global Mediation Panel.

The agenda and the schedule of the sessions will be posted soon when all details are agreed upon with the country offices and HQ teams of the five organizations. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Mediation Unit.

You can find the flyer of the program here.
